Info…
The fact that it was
founded in 1878, makes “Stevan Sremac” High School one
of the oldest secondary schools in Serbia. It was named
after a famous Serbian writer, Stevan Sremac, who had
spent 11 years teaching literature in it. Having
attended this school, many students later became
important members of the society. Let us mention only a
few renowned Serbian writers such as Ljubomir Simic,
Vladislav Petkovic-Dis, Borisav Stankovic or Branko
Miljkovic, who all started their writing careers while
still students of this school. Both students and
teachers contributed a lot to the growth of Nis into one of
the most imoportant cultural centres of Serbia. They
helped establish the City Library, the National
Theatre, the church choir “Branko” and the literary
magazine “Gradina”.
At present, there are
more than 800 students in the school. They are divided
into 25 classes, 7 of which belonging to the first
grade, whereas 6 classes form other grades each. During
admission, students choose either of the two programmes:
socio-linguistics and natural-mathematics.There are
about 50 teachers in the school. There are three
specialized laboratory classrooms (for Physics,
Chemistry and Biology), as well as the Computer Science
classroom and the School Library. Students take part in
a number of extracurricular activities. There are
various clubs, such as Literary, Drama, Art and Music
Club. Furthermore, students can take part in ecological
programmes or enter some of the sports teams (volleyball,
basketball, handball and football). Regarding compulsory
subjects, our students traditionally achieve best scores
in learning foreign languages. In addition to learning
the Serbian Language and Literature, they learn Latin,
English, German, French and Russian. In general, they
are successful at all school competitions. A lot of
students participated in student exchanges during which
they did not have any problems as far as fitting into
new environments is concerned.
“Stevan Sremac” has
received a lot of prizes, two of which particularly
stand out: “Vuk Karadzic” – awarded for the results
achieved in the fields of education and culture (named
after Vuk Karadzic, a well-known Serbian language
reformer), and Medal of Honour, which was received for
special achievements in education. |
